The city alone represents about one fifth of the national economy.\u00a0Rakhine State (formerly Arakan) is located on the western part of Myanmar between Rakhine Yoma (Mountain ranges) and bay of Bangle, and bordered with Bangladesh. Rakhine State is narrow coastal region. Sittwe is the capital city of that state. Having an area of 36,778 km and the population is about 3 million. Rakhine offers some of the richest archaeological sites in South-East Asia. The Rakhine Coast, though generally rocky, has some lovely beaches. Off shore delta islands form a wide protected channel that has served as an important harbour for many centuries. The city started as a trading port around 200 years ago and International trade alone the coast bloomed during the British era.\u00a0<strong><em><b><i>Kaladan<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Multi-modal Transit Transport Project.<\/p>\n<p>The governments of India and Myanmar are working on Kaladan Multi-modal Transit Transport Project that will facilitate trade between the two nations. The project includes the construction of the deepwater Sittwe Port at the mouth of the river, dredging of the Kaladan river to enable cargo vessels to navigate the river from Sittwe to Mizoram, the construction of a river port at Paletwa, as well as the widening and upgrade of highways between Paletwa and Myeikwa on the Indo-Myanmar border.The project will open up not only Mizoram but all of India&#8217;s northeastern states as hinterland for the Sittwe Port. Bagladesh Myanmar border trade zone was established at Maungtaw. In September 1995, Myanmar and Bangladesh initiated formal border trade at Maungtaw of Myanmar and Teknaf of Bangladesh. Bangladesh opened a river port at Teknaf in the southernmost of the country, providing the shortest river link with Maungtaw of Myanmar thus facilitating their bilateral trade.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Myanmar and Bangladesh are engaged more in border trade than normal trade. Myanmar&#8217;s exports to Bangladesh cover marine products, beans and pulses and kitchen crops, while its imports from Bangladesh include pharmaceuticals, ceramic, cotton fabric, raw jute, kitchenware, cosmetic. Besides border trade, Myanmar and Bangladesh also placed emphasis on maritime trade, signing in Yangon a technical protocol on coastal sea-borne trade between the two countries in July 2004.Aimed at facilitating trade ties, Myanmar and Bangladesh have also planned to build a cross-border highway later this year to link western Myanmar&#8217;s Rakhine state and Bangladesh&#8217;s Chittagong province. The memorandum of understanding to build the proposed 133-kilometer highway to link Buthidaung in the Rakhine state and Ramu in the Chittagong province was signed in April 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Kyaukpyu is a major town in Rakhine State, in western Myanmar. The oil pipeline, which eventually terminates in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, will be 771 kilometres (479 mi) long. The natural gas pipeline will extend further from Kunming to Guizhou and Guangxi in China, running a total of 2,806 kilometres (1,700 mi).<\/p>\n<p>The oil pipeline will have a capacity of 12 million tonnes of crude oil per year. The gas pipeline will allow delivery of natural gas from Burma&#8217;s offshore fields to China with an expected annual capacity of up to 12 bcm of natural gas.\u00a0<em><i>Kyauk Phyu Economic and Technological Development Zone Developments<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><b><i>&#8211; Kunming-Kyaukphyu Railroad Developments<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong><br \/>China and Myanmar are planning to construct a railway line to connect China&#8217;s southwestern city of Kunming, the capital of the Yunnan province, to the Kyaukphyu deep sea port in Myanmar&#8217;s western Rakhine State. Thandwe is very ancient, and is said to have been at one time the capital of Rakhine State, then called Arakan.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><b><i>&#8211; Ngapali Beach<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong><br \/>Ngapali Beach is a beach located 7 kilometres (4 mi) from the town of Thandwe (Sandoway), in Rakhine State, Myanmar. It is the most famous beach in Myanmar and is a popular tourist destination. The beach stretches for 3 km (2 mi) and overlooks the Indian Ocean.Ngapali Beach has been promoted as a major tourist destination in Myanmar. Several resorts and hotels are located in Ngapali, usually of the high end .The beach is served by Thandwe Airport. All of Myanmar&#8217;s internal airlines, have frequent flights to Thandwe from most of their destinations. The surrounding villages of Gwa are engaging in agriculture and fishery work.
